I occasionally go to the local horse sale and as I watch seemingly healthy horses go through the ring, I can't help but wonder "Are they really bad horses or were they just never given the chance to learn?" We have all watched people do the wrong thing with a horse. Or perhaps just the wrong thing for that horse. Horses react differently to different things, just like people do. I know I am afraid of spiders but snakes don't bother me. I have a mare that is terrified of white objects on the ground. She is perfectly happy to jump over white fences but don't try to get her near a bleached turtle shell on the trail. Do ride her the same way that I ride another of my mares that will walk through or past anything? Of course I don't. They react differently to things because they are different horses and they need to be treated that way.
